St. Francis of Assisi Weekly Reflections

When Jesus taught his disciples to pray, he told them to say to the Father, “your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven” (Matthew 6:10). Jesus prays that God’s will may be done here on earth just as it already is in heaven. Jesus has lived out this prayer his entire life and has taught his disciples to do the same, but it is now—facing suffering, torture, and death—that he faces his real test. Even though he had told his disciples this day would come, even though he had told them that they must all carry their crosses, even though he knew that it was for exactly this purpose he had come, three times Jesus asks the Father to let him avoid it. But each time, he concedes that the Father’s will should be done, not his own. It is with this resolve that Jesus makes the ultimate sacrifice. Centuries earlier, Isaiah had shown a similar resolve, speaking out on God’s behalf despite the abuse he received. As Jesus’ disciples, we are called to do the same, to pray that God’s will be done and to accept it as best as we can discern it. When we pray the Lord’s Prayer, as Jesus himself did, we commit to doing God’s will, whatever the consequences.

When have you found it most difficult to truly mean, “thy will be done”?

Hágase tu Voluntad

Cuando Jesús enseñó a sus discípulos a orar, les dijo que dijeran al Padre: “venga a nosotros tu reino; hágase tu voluntad en la tierra como en el cielo” (Mateo 6:10). “I am the resurrection and the life,” Jesus tells Martha in today’s Gospel, “and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die” (John 11:25-26). Still, when someone close to us dies, we weep. Even Jesus does, just moments after saying that to Martha. Seeing Mary's grief moved Jesus to tears. The loss of a loved one rocks us emotionally, no matter how strong our belief is in the resurrection.

But Jesus asks us to put our trust in God. The God whom Ezekiel trusted to raise up the faithful from their graves, the God who raised Christ from the dead, the God whom Jesus thanks for the power to overcome death, is the God we can trust when we grieve. Martha, Mary, and Lazarus are three of Jesus’ closest friends, offering him their home and their friendship. It is natural that Jesus weeps, just as we weep at the loss of a loved one. But as Jesus explains to Martha, the resurrection means that we will never die, for God’s gift of eternal life is already in us. Therefore, even tears of grief ultimately become tears of joy, as they must have for Martha and Mary when Lazarus walked out of the tomb.

How does your faith in the resurrection console you in your grief?

Jesús Lloró

“Yo soy la resurrección y la vida”, le dice Jesús a Marta en el Evangelio de hoy, “y todo el que vive y cree en mí no morirá jamás” (Juan 11:25-26). Aun así, cuando alguien cercano a nosotros muere, lloramos. Incluso Jesús lo hace, momentos después de decirle eso a Marta. Ver el dolor de María conmovió a Jesús hasta las lágrimas. Jesus heals a blind man in today’s Gospel by spiƫng on the ground, smearing the clay on his eyes, and sending him to wash it off. But all this happens in the first few verses of a lengthy passage, suggesƟng that there is more to the story, and so there is. A lot more. Jesus’ cure not only enables the man to see the world around him, but also to see God’s power to change his life. However, while he is healed of his blindness, everyone else in the story remains blind. The authoriƟes refuse to see, unwilling to look past Jesus doing this on the Sabbath. The man’s parents turn a blind eye, fearful of being expelled from the synagogue. His neighbors likely only saw him as a blind beggar and don’t recognize him now that he is no longer either. Sins such as hypocrisy, selfcenteredness, or indifference can make us blind. Lent reminds us that sin blinds us to God’s grace and mercy, always visible to those who look beyond appearances. Jesus gives us the ability to wash away our blindnesses and see with the eyes of Christ. Exposing our souls to the light, as Paul counsels the Ephesians, lets us live as children of the light so that we may produce goodness, righteousness, and truth.

En el Evangelio de hoy, Jesús sana a un ciego escupiendo en el suelo, untándole los ojos con lodo y enviándolo a lavarse. In Samaria and elsewhere, women typically went to draw water from the well in the cool of the morning, accompanied by friends and neighbors. But this woman comes alone in the heat of midday. Perhaps the other women in the town shunned or pitied her after so many marriages. But she cannot live without water, so she approaches the well even though an unfamiliar man is already sitting there.

In his foreign accent, this Jewish man asks her for a drink, breaking cultural and religious boundaries. They go on to speak of her life and living water, of Samaritan and Jews, of worship and faith. She had come to draw water, but instead is drawn into conversation. She had come for water, but leaves her water jar behind.

She had come alone, but leaves to tell the whole town. She had come with what seems to be a history of unsuccessful love, but leaves in love with the Messiah, the Christ. At the well where Jacob met Rachel, she meets the one who transforms her life.

What would Jesus uncover about you in an encounter with him? How does the water of eternal life quench your spiritual thirst?

En Samaria y otros lugares, las mujeres solían ir a sacar agua del pozo al fresco de la mañana, acompañadas de amigas y vecinas. Pero esta mujer llega sola en el calor del mediodía. Quizás las demás mujeres del pueblo la rechazaban o la compadecían después de tantos matrimonios. Pero no puede vivir sin agua, así que se acerca al pozo aunque un hombre desconocido ya está sentado allí.

Con su acento extranjero, este judío le pide de beber, rompiendo barreras culturales y religiosas. Continúan hablando de su vida y del agua viva, de samaritanos y judíos, de adoración y fe. Llamado a la Fidelidad

Today Jesus bring us along with three of his closest disciples to witness a brief glimpse of the kingdom of God. Remember a few weeks ago when we heard the Beatitudes? Jesus spoke of the kingdom of God for the first time after going up a mountain with his disciples that day. He told them that those who are poor in spirit would inherit the kingdom of God. He gave us a model of that poverty by emptying himself when coming into the world, then living simply and depending upon the Father.

Jesus taught that those persecuted for righteousness's sake would also inherit the kingdom of God. Jesus knew that he himself would be persecuted, put to death, and then raised by the Father. Today he ascends a mountain to reveal the glory of the kingdom, where his face is as bright as the sun and the dead appear alongside him.

Can we see that glory of God's kingdom here and now? Can we see the kingdom in those who live simply and righteously while acknowledging their dependence on God? This Lent, let us transfigure our lives, turning away from sin and turning toward God's love and mercy, which bathe us in light as bright as the sun.

Tranfiguremos Nuestras Vidas

Hoy Jesus nos trae, junto con tres de sus discípulos más cercanos, para presenciar un breve atisbo del reino de Dios. ¿Recuerdan hace unas semanas, cuando escuchamos las Bienaventuranzas? Jesús habló del reino de Dios por primera vez después de subir a una montaña con sus discípulos ese día. Les dijo que los pobres de espíritu heredarían el reino de Dios. Nos dio un ejemplo de esa pobreza al despojarse de sí mismo al venir al mundo, viviendo con sencillez y dependiendo del Padre.

Jesús enseñó que quienes son perseguidos por causa de la justicia también heredarán el reino de Dios. Jesús sabía que él mismo sería perseguido, condenado a muerte y luego resucitado por el Padre. Hoy asciende a una montana para revelar la gloria del reino, donde su rostro brilla como el sol y los muertos aparecen a su lado.

¿Podemos ver esa gloria del reino de Dios aquí y ahora? ¿Podemos ver el reino en quienes viven con sencillez y rectitud, reconociendo su dependencia de Dios? En esta Cuaresma, transfiguremos nuestras vidas, alejandonos del pecado y volviendonos hacia el amor y la misericordia de Dios, que nos banan en una luz tan brillante como el sol.
