Great Is Your Faith!

Remember last week when we heard the Gospel story of Jesus walking on the water? Remember what happened to Peter? Peter dared to walk on the water himself, but when the wind rose and the storm strengthened, he panicked and called out to Jesus to save him. Remember what Jesus said to him? He reproved Peter, his closest disciple, saying, "O you of little faith" (Matthew 14:31). On the other hand, today we hear Jesus tell a Canaanite woman - a pagan woman in pagan territory - who acknowledges him as "Son of David," addresses him as "Lord" three times, and persistently pleads with him to heal her daughter, "O woman, great is your faith!" (Matthew 15:28). Significantly, Jesus does this in front of his disciples, giving this Gentile woman the opportunity to teach the disciples true faith. She recognizes God's merciful grace flowing through Jesus and realizes that there is so much of it that even "the scraps" can overflow all the way to her daughter, a nonbeliever who is not even present. Jesus saves both Peter and the woman's daughter, but in remarking upon her faith he shows his disciples the importance of persevering in faith, even when the Lord does not appear to be answering.

¿Recuerdas la semana pasada, cuando escuchamos el relato evangélico de Jesús caminando sobre las aguas? ¿Recuerdas lo que le sucedió a Pedro? Pedro se atrevió a caminar él mismo sobre el agua, pero cuando se levantó el viento y arreció la tormenta, sintió pánico y clamó a Jesús para que lo salvara. ¿Recuerdas lo que Jesús le dijo? Reprendió a Pedro, su discípulo más cercano, diciéndole: "¡Hombre de poca fe!" (Mateo 14:31). En cambio, hoy escuchamos a Jesús decirle a una mujer cananea —una mujer pagana en territorio pagano— que lo reconoce como "Hijo de David", se dirige a él tres veces como "Señor" y le suplica con insistencia que cure a su hija: "¡Mujer, qué grande es tu fe!" (Mateo 15:28). Es significativo que Jesús haga esto delante de sus discípulos, brindando a esta mujer gentil la oportunidad de enseñarles lo que es la verdadera fe. Ella reconoce la gracia misericordiosa de Dios que fluye a través de Jesús y comprende que es tan abundante que incluso "las migajas" pueden llegar hasta su hija, una no creyente que ni siquiera está presente. Jesús salva tanto a Pedro como a la hija de la mujer, pero al destacar la fe de ella, muestra a sus discípulos la importancia de perseverar en la fe, incluso cuando parece que el Señor no responde.

Take Courage

Poor Peter. Try as he might, he just cannot conquer his fears. The rough seas in today's Gospel unsettle the disciples - even Peter, who had been a fisherman all his life and must have weathered storms like this before. They are so scared that they are terrified at the sight of the Lord. They cry out to him, not in relief, but in fear. Jesus immediately reassures them, telling them to take courage. As if to prove that what he's seeing is real, Peter challenges the Lord to invite him to walk on the water as well. But when he obeys, his fear gets the best of him; he panics and starts to sink. "O you of little faith"—Jesus says as he reaches out to save him—"why did you doubt?" (Matthew 14:31). Peter doubted because his fear drowned out his faith. In a Hollywood script, Peter — the Rock — would never again let his fears overcome his faith. But we know that he does — three times! — on Good Friday. May this be a lesson to us. Our lives may feel like a boat tossed about on high waves, making us anxious or fearful over and over again. But as with Peter, may our faith always be there, ready once again to conquer our fears.

Pobre Pedro. Por más que lo intenta, simplemente no logra vencer sus temores. El mar agitado del Evangelio de hoy inquieta a los discípulos, incluso a Pedro, quien había sido pescador toda su vida y seguramente había capeado tormentas como esta anteriormente. Están tan asustados que sienten pavor al ver al Señor. Le gritan, no con alivio, sino con miedo. Jesús los tranquiliza de inmediato, invitándolos a cobrar ánimo. Como queriendo comprobar que lo que ve es real, Pedro desafía al Señor a que lo invite a caminar también sobre las aguas. Pero al obedecer, el miedo se apodera de él; entra en pánico y comienza a hundirse. "Hombre de poca fe —dice Jesús mientras extiende la mano para salvarlo—, ¿por qué has dudado?" (Mateo 14, 31). Pedro dudó porque su miedo ahogó su fe. En un guion de Hollywood, Pedro —la Roca— jamás volvería a permitir que sus temores vencieran a su fe. Pero sabemos que sí lo hace —¡tres veces!— el Viernes Santo. Que esto nos sirva de lección. Puede que sintamos nuestras vidas como una barca sacudida por grandes olas, que nos llena de ansiedad o temor una y otra vez. Pero, al igual que con Pedro, que nuestra fe esté siempre presente, lista una vez más para vencer nuestros miedos.

He Said the Blessing

Facing a crowd of more than five thousand people in an otherwise deserted place with the sun going down, the disciples propose a sensible plan: dismiss them all and let them find food on their own. But Jesus' heart has been moved by the sight of this multitude and he is not going to let them fend for themselves, no matter how little it appears he has to offer. Recall Isaiah in the first reading. Living in exile, the Jewish people are suffering, starving, and leaderless. Yet the prophet hears God calling them to come eat and drink freely, renewing the covenant once made with King David, reminding them of the promised Messiah. Today we hear Jesus, the Messiah, the new covenant, propose that thousands of people feast on merely five loaves and two fish. Blessing this meager food, he gives it to his disciples to share, and "without paying and without cost," "all ate and were satisfied" (Isaiah 55:1, Matthew 14:20). Today Jesus' heart is still moved by the vast crowds around the world who come to him to be satisfied with the living bread he offers without cost, for, as Saint Paul writes, nothing can separate us from God's love through Jesus Christ our Lord.

How does receiving Christ's body nourish you as a disciple?

Ante una multitud de más de cinco mil personas, en un lugar por lo demás desierto y al caer la tarde, los discípulos proponen un plan sensato: despedir a todos para que busquen comida por su cuenta. Pero el corazón de Jesús se conmueve al ver a esta multitud y no está dispuesto a dejar que se las arreglen solos, por muy poco que parezca tener para ofrecer. Recordemos a Isaías en la primera lectura: el pueblo judío, en el exilio, sufre hambre y carece de líderes. Sin embargo, el profeta escucha a Dios invitándolos a comer y beber gratuitamente, renovando la alianza establecida con el rey David y recordándoles al Mesías prometido. Hoy escuchamos a Jesús —el Mesías, la nueva alianza— proponer que miles de personas se alimenten con apenas cinco panes y dos peces. Tras bendecir este escaso alimento, lo entrega a sus discípulos para que lo repartan y, "sin pagar y sin costo alguno", "todos comieron y se saciaron" (Isaías 55, 1; Mateo 14, 20). Hoy, el corazón de Jesús sigue conmoviéndose ante las inmensas multitudes de todo el mundo que acuden a Él para saciarse con el pan vivo que ofrece gratuitamente; pues, como escribe san Pablo, nada podrá separarnos del amor de Dios en Cristo Jesús, Señor nuestro.
