Doing "yes" trumps saying "yes"! The prophet Ezekiel was something of a "strange bird," usually acting out his parables rather than talking them out. But here he is as straightforward as can be: Turning away from virtue brings death. Turning away from wickedness brings life. We find this theme of actions having consequences also in today's parable. Jesus holds a mirror up to the chief priests and elders who were so critical of tax collectors and sinners. But this group of disreputable people heard and responded to John the Baptist's call to conversion. This was not so for the "official" (and self-appointed) religious people. Jesus is our model for self-emptying for the sake of others, even to the point of death. By both his birth and his dying on the cross, Christ gave himself up for us and for the life of the world. For this reason Paul calls the Philippians (and us) to have the same mind and attitude that was in Christ, humbling ourselves and looking out for the interests of others. The best course is to bring "saying yes" and "doing yes" together.
What makes it hard to move from saying yes to doing yes?
"Decir" y "hacer" lo que dices son dos cosas muy distintas. El profeta Ezequiel era un poco extraño, muchas veces actuaba sus parábolas en vez de contarlas. Pero hoy muestra ser más sencillo: apartarse de la virtud trae la muerte. Alejarse de la maldad trae la vida. En la parábola de hoy nos encontramos con el tema de las acciones que traen consecuencias. Jesús le pide a los sumos sacerdotes y los ancianos que estaban criticando a los recaudadores de impuestos y a los pecadores que se autoanalizaran, ya que fue este mismo grupo de personas de mala reputación quienes si escucharon y respondieron a la llamada de Juan el Bautista a la conversión. Sin embargo las personas religiosas "oficiales" ignoraron el llamado. Jesús es nuestro modelo a seguir, el de dar de si mismo para el bien de los demás, incluso hasta el punto de la muerte. If you have ever felt that others got much more than they deserved, or that you deserved much more than you got, today's parable is not going to make you happy. A first—and understandable—reaction would be: "Unfair! How can the landowner give the same wage to those who worked a few hours at the end of the day as he gives those who bore the day's heat, working from early morning until sunset?" But Jesus is not giving a lesson on being fair or spinning a tale reflecting good management-labor relations. This is a kingdom of heaven parable that proclaims God's rule as one marked by unbelievable generosity. All who seek the kingdom of heaven are going to get their heart's desire: life is God. Paul gets it. While longing "to depart this life and be with Christ," he is happy to keep on working for the benefit of the Philippians so they might enter the kingdom. Jesus' story invites us to know the generosity of God, both as recipients and as mediators to others. We are all going to get more than we deserve.
How do you find joy in God's generosity?

God might seem petulant to become so upset with the Israelites' complaining about food that serpents are sent to kill them. But it wasn't the food as much as the accusation that God had brought them out into the desert to die. God had saved them from Pharaoh's army, liberated them from slavery, shown them signs and wonders by sending manna in the desert and causing water to flow from a rock. Now they were saying this God who wanted life for them had led them out to the desert to die! No wonder God's anger flares. But it fades just as quickly when people repent. The very thing that brought death becomes a symbol of life. If they look at the bronze serpent lifted up, they will be saved. This story prepares us for Jesus' words in today's Gospel. God will take another symbol of death, the cross, and transform it into an expression of divine love for all of us.
What do you see when you look at the cross?
Dios podría parecer malhumorante al molestarse tanto con las quejas de los Israelitas acerca de los alimentos tanto así, que les envía serpientes para matarlos. Pero, no fueron las quejas sobre comida, si no la acusación de que Dios los había llevado al desierto a morir. All three readings remind us that we are our brothers' and sisters' keeper. This means not only reaching out to those in need, but also pulling them back from doing harm. God called Ezekiel to be the watchman for the house of Israel, speaking out to "turn [the wicked] from [their] way." The words of Paul remind the Romans that the only debt they should have is to love one another, adding that love does no evil to the neighbor. These words can be heard as referring only to individual relationships. The fourth great speech of Jesus in Matthew's Gospel, however, concerns the community, particularly its responsibility to conform a wrongdoer. First, one tries to persuade on a one-to-one basis, but if that fails, take another one or even two with you. And if that fails, get the community involved. Jesus' final words can sound as though a time might come to cut a wrongdoer off. But remember that tax collectors and sinners were the very ones for whom Jesus came first. The Christian community is never to give up on one another.

When Peter answered Jesus' question with, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God," his understanding of what this meant was limited. Like most of the people of his day, Peter was expecting a Messiah (or "Anointed One") who would be a military leader sent to restore God's people to the glory they had when David was king. So when Jesus starts talking about having to suffer greatly and be killed, Peter takes Jesus aside and rebukes him. Jesus explodes. Peter, last week called a rock, has become an obstacle to the Father's plan, no longer thinking like God but only as humans do. For this reason, Jesus says to him, "Get behind me, Satan!" That is, "Peter, you stumbling block, don't block me. Follow me." To walk with Jesus means to follow him along the way, taking up the cross, losing one's life for his sake. Those who follow will be willing to "offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God," making them their "spiritual worship." This is the sacrificial life that comes from working for justice, caring for the poor and vulnerable, forgiving enemies.

Certain questions are life-changers. "Do you take this person to be your husband/wife?" comes to mind. Jesus' query to his disciples is another such question: "Who do you say that I am?" It invites a commitment. Simon Peter's answer was correct, though his understanding was limited. Next week we are made aware how limited it was. Today we can appreciate its truthfulness. "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God," Simon says. And Jesus responds immediately, "Blessed are you...For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father." We can hear Jesus asking each of us today, "Who do you say that I am?" In other words, "Do you believe that I am the Son of God, your Savior, the One who came to bring you fullness of life?" To be able to say, "Yes, I do believe!" is a gift from our heavenly Father. To be able to live out this faith by following the example and teaching of Jesus is to be truly blessed.

Today's Gospel offers a verbal duel between Jesus and a desperate woman. She approaches Jesus because her daughter is tormented by a demon, asking Jesus to pity her child. At first, Jesus ignores her plea; then he says he has come only for the lost sheep of Israel, implying that his mission doesn't extend to a Gentile like this Cannanite woman. She in turn ignores his rejection and keeps pleading. Then, Jesus makes one of those remarks that have you saying, "Did he really say that? Did he call her a dog?" But this woman will let nothing stop her. She has a sick child and this man has healing a power. The result is one of the great comeback lines in scripture. Finally, Jesus relents: "Woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish!" Is it not possible that Jesus truly did grow in understanding his mission? That he learned about his Father's plan as he went along, especially that he was sent for all people? How wonderful that this woman's faith, always a gift from God, helped educate him.
When has someone else's faith brought you to a deeper awareness of God's plan for you?
El evangelio de hoy nos presenta a Jesús en un duelo verbal con una mujer desesperada. Ella se acerca a Él porque su hija está atormentada por un demonio y le pide a Jesús que tenga piedad de ella. Three men are sinking in today's readings. A discouraged Elijah has been sinking into depression. He has been on the run from Queen Jezebel, who wanted to kill him. Out in the desert Elijah prayed to God: "Enough! Life is unbearable, let me die." Instead, God sent an angel with some food and instructions for Elijah to walk forty days to Mt. Horeb. There, as we hear today, God makes a gentle appearance to call the prophet back to life. Like Elijah, Paul the apostle was sinking into "great sorrow and constant anguish" as he grieved over his own people's rejection of Jesus. His preaching to them seemed to have few results and he was often run out of town, beaten, or tossed into jail. Still, he perseveres, trusting in God. Paul comes to realize that " God has not rejected his people...The gifts and the call of God are irrevocable" (Romans 11:2, 29). Finally, we see Peter is sinking into the sea as fear overwhelms his faith. Notice, however, that as soon as Peter looks to Jesus, things work out. God will not le the storms or sorrows of life destroy us.
Do you trust God to rescue you?

Jesus responds to people's needs in many ways: preaching, teaching, casting out demons, and healing. Today his compassion leads him first to heal, then to feed the people, a vast crowd of "five thousand men, not counting women and children." When the disciples only come up with five loaves and two fish, Jesus takes these in his hands, blesses and breaks them, then gets the disciples to give them out. Notice how Jesus changes the disciples' course of action—from turning people out on their own to using the resources at hand, including God. All are fed. And there are leftovers! Jesus is truly the Son of his Father, who wishes to feed his children like a father at a summer picnic; "Come and get it. There's plenty to drink: water, milk and wine, and lots to eat: bread and plenty of rich fare." All to one end, that we might have life. Our Father calls his family together at every Eucharist, fulfilling the words of Paul: "nothing will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord."
How has God fed you this week?

Today Jesus concludes his discourse featuring parables about the kingdom of heaven. He encourages us to take initiative in seeking this kingdom, God's presence in our lives. Perhaps you have already discovered it, as one discovers a buried treasure. You're going along as usual, when suddenly you realize that God is near and you hadn't noticed it. Or, coming to realize that knowing and living in friendship with Jesus is worth more than life itself, you seek out this source of life, this pearl of great price. Or maybe you have discovered that the presence of God can be found in the midst of life's messiness, like good fish among the bad, and that eventually things will get sorted out, but not yet. We can join Solomon and ask for an understanding heart to judge what belongs to the kingdom of heaven and what does not. God has called us to be children of the kingdom and invites us to live in right relationship with God and each other. This promise gives us hope that one day we will experience the glory of God and dwell there forever.

We live in a world of opposites. We know what it means to speak and to hear truth or lies, to do good or evil, to behold beauty or ugliness. We can find these opposites in the world around us and within us. They are the fruit of our freedom. Jesus' parables today all have to do with growth—of both wheat and weeds, of the mustard seed, and of dough that has been leavened. It is not difficult to apply the lesson learned from prematurely pulling up weeds and destroying the wheat. Jesus then reminds us that we can miss the Father's active presence in the world, since it often begins as small as a mustard seed and as negligible as a pinch of leaven. But watch out: growth and expansion are on the way. Meanwhile, the challenge is to be as patient with others as God is with us and to persist in purifying our own hearts.

Vivimos en un mundo de opuestos. Sabemos lo que significa hablar y oír la verdad o la mentira, hacer el bien o el mal, para contemplar la belleza o la fealdad. Podemos encontrar estos opuestos en el mundo alrededor de nosotros y dentro de nosotros mismos; estos son los frutos de nuestra libertad. In the coming Sundays, we meet Jesus the storyteller, sowing his stories like good seed into our imaginations so they might bear fruit in our lives. The great artist Vincent Van Gogh made several paintings called The Sower, capturing how the sower vigorously spreads the seed. In Jesus' day, the land was first plowed and turned over, then the sower went forth and scattered the seed generously, tossing it with abandon. That is why it would land all over the place—on the footpath, on rocky ground, among weeds, and on fertile land. Jesus continues to sow the seed of God's word, especially whenever we read or hear the scriptures. You might ask yourself: What kind of reception do I give the word of God? Then, consider each of the four places the seed lands. Or you could ask what word of God, what teaching of Jesus, has fallen on the footpath? What exhortation has fallen on rocky ground? Among weeds that choked it? On fertile land that produced fruit?
What word does Jesus call me to take more completely into my life? One calling for forgiveness, for justice, for peace-making, for loving one another?

What comforting words we hear today! God desires so very much that we come to share the divine life of the Trinity. Paul states boldly: "You are in the spirit, if only the Spirit of God dwells in you." But it is Jesus' words that touch the heart. First, he praises his Father for revealing "these things" to little ones. What things? That everything has been handed over to Jesus by the Father and we come to know the Father through Jesus. Then we hear some of the most soothing words in the Gospels: "Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest." Jesus presents himself as our resting place. We can place our weary heads against him, as one does with a dear friend. We can rest in his arms. The yoke he offers to guide us to the Father is his teaching about the kingdom of heaven and working to bring it into the world. Jesus, our King, leads us into the peaceful kingdom and into the presence of the Father even now.
How do you take time to rest in Him?
¡Qué palabras tan consoladoras las que escuchamos hoy! Dios desea que lleguemos a compartir la vida divina de la Trinidad. Pablo afirma audazmente: "Usted está en el espíritu, ya que el Espíritu de Dios mora en nosotros." Pero son las palabras de Jesús que tocan el corazón. Primero, Él alaba al Padre por haber revelado "estas cosas" a los más pequeños. ¿Qué cosas? El que todo fue entregado a Jesús por el Padre y que nosotros lleguemos a conocer al Padre a través de Jesús. Luego, escuchamos algunas de las palabras más confortantes en los Evangelios: "Vengan a mi, todos los que están fatigados y agobiados por la carga, y yo los aliviare." Jesús se presenta como el lugar de descanso. Podemos colocar nuestra cabeza cansada en su hombro, como se hace con un amigo muy querido. Podemos descansar en sus brazos. El yugo que Él ofrece para guiarnos hacia el Padre es su enseñanza sobre el Reino de los Cielos y se esfuerza para traerlo al mundo. Jesús, nuestro Rey, nos lleva al reino de paz y a la presencia del Padre, incluso ahora.
¿Cómo puede tomar tiempo para descansar en Él?
