Jesus loved to preach using parables. Parables are powerful, for they have multiple layers. Take them at face value, and they're captivating and memorable stories. But peel back the layers and they reveal deeper and richer meaning. Today Jesus tells us the parable of the sower who sows seed indiscriminately. The seed that lands on rich soil bears good and plentiful fruit, while the seed that falls elsewhere is either eaten by birds or yields seedlings that get choked off or shrivel up. It's a wonderful story of a generous sower and the importance of fertile ground. But as Jesus explains to his disciples, the parable is also a metaphor for how different people treat "the word of the kingdom" (Matthew 13:19). But peel down another layer and another, even deeper meaning is revealed. Jesus himself is the Word made flesh. He is "the word of the kingdom," sown by the Father to take root in us, germinating, growing, blossoming, and bringing forth fruit, thirty, sixty, or a hundredfold. As disciples, may we be that fertile ground in which the Word can bear fruit, achieving, as Isaiah would put it, the end for which God sent him.

When are you like rocky or thorny ground, preventing a teaching of Jesus from taking root or causing it to be choked off by other concerns?

Salio un sembrador a sembrar

A Jesús le encantaba predicar mediante parábolas. Las parábolas son poderosas porque poseen múltiples niveles de significado. Si se toman en su sentido literal, resultan historias cautivadoras y memorables; pero, al profundizar en ellas, revelan un sentido más rico y profundo. Hoy, Jesús nos narra la parábola del sembrador que esparce la semilla indiscriminadamente. La semilla que cae en tierra fértil produce frutos buenos y abundantes, mientras que la que cae en otros lugares es devorada por las aves o da lugar a brotes que terminan ahogados o marchitos. Es una historia maravillosa sobre un sembrador generoso y la importancia de la tierra fértil. Sin embargo, tal como Jesús explica a sus discípulos, la parábola es también una metáfora de cómo las distintas personas acogen "la palabra del Reino" (Mateo 13, 19). Pero, si profundizamos aún más, se revela otro sentido todavía más hondo: Jesús mismo es la Palabra hecha carne. Él es "la palabra del Reino", sembrada por el Padre para echar raíces en nosotros, germinar, crecer, florecer y dar fruto al treinta, al sesenta o al ciento por uno. How often have we dreaded something we knew we had to do, only to find out after we did it that it wasn't nearly as bad as we'd feared? Remember just last Sunday, when Jesus told his disciples that they would have to take up their crosses and be willing to lose their lives for his sake? Our own crosses, our burdens, may seem so overwhelming that we'd rather ignore them, lest we be crushed by their weight. On the other hand, today we hear Jesus reassure us, explaining that his yoke is easy and his burden light. In fact, Jesus invites everyone who labors and is burdened to come to him and he will give them rest. Carrying our crosses, shouldering our burdens, and giving up our self-centeredness can be difficult and scary, but Jesus does not require us to go it alone. He will accompany us every step of the way, easing the load we carry. We can trust in him because he carried his own cross—literally as well as figuratively—and even though he is God the Son, he chose to obey the will of God the Father. Just as Jesus has lightened our load in enabling us to overcome sin and death, he continues to lighten our load by supporting us as we lift those burdens that weigh so heavily upon us.

¿Qué cruz estás cargando hoy?

¿Cuántas veces hemos temido algo que descubrir, una vez hecho, que no era ni de lejos tan terrible como temíamos? ¿Recuerdas el domingo pasado, cuando Jesús dijo a sus discípulos que tendrían que cargar con su cruz y estar dispuestos a perder la vida por su causa? Nuestra propia cruz, nuestra carga, puede parecernos tan abrumadora que preferimos ignorarla, por miedo a quedar aplastados bajo su peso. Sin embargo, hoy escuchamos a Jesús tranquilizarnos, explicándonos que su yugo es suave y su carga ligera. De hecho, Jesús invita a todos los que están cansados y agobiados a acudir a él, prometiéndoles descanso. Cargar con nuestra cruz, sobrellevar nuestra carga y renunciar a nuestro egocentrismo puede resultar difícil y aterrador, pero Jesús no nos pide que lo hagamos solos. Él nos acompañará en cada paso del camino, aliviando el peso que llevamos. Podemos confiar en él porque él cargó con su propia cruz, tanto literal como figuradamente, y, aun siendo Dios Hijo, eligió obedecer la voluntad de Dios Padre. Así como Jesús aligeró nuestra carga al permitirnos vencer el pecado y la muerte, sigue aligerándola al sostenernos mientras levantamos esas cargas que pesan tanto sobre nosotros.
