In today’s first reading, the author compares God to the gods of other nations. Other people said their gods could control the weather or rule the seas or make the land fertile. But unlike those gods, our God entered into a personal relationship with us. Our God rescued us, made a covenant with us, and as Paul points out, adopted us as children and chose us as heirs of eternal life. God not only created the world, but also created a relationship with those who are created in God’s image. While Jesus was on earth, we saw how close and personal his relationship was to the Father. Before his death and resurrection, he told his disciple how close and personal his relationship was to the Holy Spirit and that the Spirit would remain with us forever. Therefore, Jesus could tell them, “I am with you always” (Mathew 28:20). The wonderful intimacy that allow us to be called children of God to address God with the intimate term “Abba”, to be heir of eternal life, and to believe that God is with us always, indeed right here and right now, is modeled on the ultimate intimacy of the three persons of the Trinity.

Tres Personas Un Solo Dios

En la primera lectura de hoy, el autor compara a Dios con los dioses de otras naciones. Otras personas decían que sus dioses podían controlar el clima, gobernar los mares o hacer que la tierra fuera fértil. Pero a diferencia de esos dioses, nuestro Dios entró en una relación personal con nosotros. Jesus promised his disciples that he would not abandon them, that he would send an Advocate, the Holy Spirit, who would come down to them from above and remain with them forever. The Holy Spirit came to the disciples at Pentecost and comes to us when we are baptized. We see today that from the start, the coming of the Holy Spirit is perceived in many different ways, in as many ways as there are people. Luke, in the book of Acts, describes the arrival of the Holy Spirit sounding “like a strong driving wind” and appearing as “tongues as of fire” (Acts 2:2-3). However, John says Jesus gently breathed on them to impart the Holy Spirit. Furthermore, Paul declares that the Holy Spirit is manifested in different ways in different people. The Holy Spirit, however, establishes unity in that diversity. We see that in the first reading, when somehow everyone can understand the Twelve even though they speak many different languages. Longing for that unity in diversity today, we can find it in the Holy Spirit. To us Paul’s metaphor, in the body of Christ, as well as in the body of all God’s children, we are blessed with diversity in our oneness.

El Espíritu Santo En Tí

Jesús prometió a sus discípulos que no los abandonaría, que enviaría un Abogado, el Espíritu Santo, que descendería sobre ellos desde lo alto y permanecería con ellos para siempre. El Espíritu Santo vino a los discípulos en Pentecostés y viene a nosotros cuando somos bautizados. Vemos hoy que, desde el principio, la venida del Espíritu Santo se percibe de muchas maneras diferentes, de tantas maneras como personas hay. Lucas, en el libro de los Hechos, describe la llegada del Espíritu Santo sonando “como un fuerte viento que impele” y apareciendo como “lenguas de fuego” (Hechos 2:2-3). Sin embargo, Juan dice que Jesús sopló suavemente sobre ellos para impartir el Espíritu Santo. Además, Pablo declara que el Espíritu Santo se manifiesta de diferentes maneras en diferentes personas. Jesus asks his disciples to be his witnesses after he ascends to the Father. This makes sense, for he had spent more time with them than with anyone else. They had heard him preach and teach, had seen him heal and perform miracles. They were true eyewitnesses. But where does that leave us? Saint Paul answers that question in his letter to the Ephesians when he writes, “may the eyes of your hearts be enlightened” (Ephesians 1:18). Note that Paul did not encounter Christ until after he had already ascended to the Father. All the missionary trips Paul made, all the letters he wrote, all the Christian communities he formed, he did without even once personally having witnessed Jesus Christ here on earth. This proves that we can take Jesus’ two-thousand-year-old instruction to his disciples to be his witnesses as his instruction to all of us today. The eyes of our hearts have been enlightened—through baptism, through the Holy Spirit, through God’s word, through prayer, through those who have formed us and taught us, and through our many years of lived faith. In our hearts, we have witnessed the Good News of the Lord and so we can—and must—give witness to what we have seen.

La Ascención Del Señor

Jesús pide a sus discípulos que sean sus testigos después de ascender al Padre. Esto tiene sentido, porque pasó más tiempo con ellos que con cualquier otra persona. Lo habían oído predicar y enseñar, lo habían visto sanar y realizar milagros. Fueron verdaderos testigos presenciales. ¿Pero dónde nos deja eso? San Pablo responde a esa pregunta en su carta a los Efesios cuando escribe: “Que los ojos de vuestro corazón sean iluminados” (Efesios 1:18). Tenga en cuenta que Pablo no encontró a Cristo hasta que ya había ascendido al Padre. Falling head over heels in love with someone, when your beloved is all you can think about, is an incredibly powerful feeling. Our first experience of this was likely as a baby, with the bond between us and a parent. If we're lucky, we fall completely in love again as a young adult, with someone we eventually marry. If we have children, we experience that feeling again and again. In each case—with a parent, a spouse, a close friend, a child—we are willing, as today’s Gospel says, even to lay down our lives for the one we love. We do so in an everyday sense when we lay down our own priorities, choices, and desires for someone else’s. How extraordinary it is, then, that Jesus literally lay down his life for all of us (for we are all his loved ones) to give us new life. Just as with us, the reason he does that is love—the love he has for his Father as well as the love he has for all humanity. May we take to heart that every person is loved by God as we love our own loved ones, and therefore that every person is someone whom we are called to love selflessly as well.

Amen Los Unos A Los Otros

Enamorarse perdidamente de alguien, cuando tu amado es todo en lo que puedes pensar, es un sentimiento increíblemente poderoso. Nuestra primera experiencia de esto probablemente fue cuando éramos un bebé, con el vínculo entre nosotros y nuestros padres. Si tenemos suerte, nos enamoramos completamente de nuevo cuando somos jóvenes adultos, de alguien con quien eventualmente nos casaremos. Si tenemos hijos, experimentamos ese sentimiento una y otra vez. En cada caso (con un padre, un cónyuge, un amigo cercano, un hijo) estamos dispuestos, como dice el Evangelio de hoy, incluso a dar nuestra vida por aquel a quien amamos. Lo hacemos en un sentido cotidiano cuando establecemos nuestras propias prioridades, elecciones y deseos por los de otra persona. Qué extraordinario es, entonces, que Jesús literalmente entregue su vida por todos nosotros (porque todos somos sus seres amados) para darnos vida nueva. Al igual que con nosotros, la razón por la que hace eso es el amor: el amor que tiene por su Padre así como el amor que tiene por toda la humanidad. Que tomemos en serio que cada persona es amada por Dios como nosotros amamos a nuestros seres queridos y, por lo tanto, que cada persona es alguien a quien estamos llamados a amar también desinteresadamente.
