Serve One Another with Love

Abraham, Sarah, Martha, and Mary all model hospitality beautifully in today’s readings, each in a different way. Abraham greets three strangers who appear outside his tent, bending over backwards to offer them a wonderful meal as he waits on them under the holy terebinth tree. Sarah, inside the tent, measures the flour, make the dough, and bakes the bread. The narrator mentions at the very beginning that this was the LORD, but Abraham does not realize this until the stranger solemnly predicts that Sarah, well past her childbearing years, will bear a son. Abraham and Sarah shower the stranger with generosity, not realizing that it is the LORD. On the other hand, Martha and Mary know it is the Lord when they welcome him into their house. We’re familiar with the story: Mary gets to rest and listen to Jesus while Martha does all the work. Yet each is serving in her own way. Mary is listening so that she can serve as a disciple. Last Sunday, the Gospel began with the greatest commandment: to love God with all your heart and to love your neighbor as yourself. Today we hear these commandments come together. All four hosts love and serve the Lord as they love and serve their neighbor.

Abraham, Sara, Marta y María modelan bellamente la hospitalidad en las lecturas de hoy, cada una de una manera diferente. Abraham saluda a tres extraños que aparecen fuera de su tienda, inclinándose hacia atrás para ofrecerles una comida maravillosa mientras esperan debajo del árbol sagrado. Sara, dentro de la tienda, mide la harina, hace la masa y hornea el pan. El narrador menciona al principio que este era el SEÑOR, pero Abraham no se da cuenta de esto hasta que el extraño predice solemnemente que Sara, más allá de sus años fértiles, tendrá un hijo. Abraham y Sara deslumbran al extraño con su generosidad, sin darse cuenta de que es el SEÑOR. Por otro lado, Marta y María saben que es el Señor cuando lo reciben en su casa. Todos conocen la historia: María descansa y escucha a Jesús, mientras que Marta hace todo el trabajo. Sin embargo, cada una está sirviendo a su manera. María está escuchando para poder servir como discípulo. El domingo pasado, el Evangelio comenzó con el mayor mandamiento: ama a Dios con todo tu corazón y ama a tu prójimo como a ti mismo. Hoy escuchamos que estos mandamientos se juntan. Los cuatro anfitriones aman y sirven al Señor como así como aman y sirven a su prójimo.
