Every Lent we go to the desert with Jesus to witness his being tempted by the devil. Going to the desert might not sound too appealing: hot during the day, cold at night; inhabited by rattlesnakes, tarantulas and scorpions. But lessons are learned there. God shaped the former slaves of Egypt into the people of Israel during its forty years of wandering. And in the desert Jesus teaches us what it means to be God's beloved child, as we witness his quick exchanges with the devil. Satan: "If you really are God's child, jump and let God catch you." Jesus: "I don't test God." Satan: "Worship me and I will give you this entire world." Jesus: "I only worship God." Jesus' responses came from the book of Deuteronomy, part of the Torah, the law given to Moses expressing God's covenant with Israel. Where Adam and Eve yielded to the temptation to be like God and Israel set up a golden calf to worship in place of God, Jesus put his trust in the Father.

Las Lecciones del Desierto

Cada Cuaresma vamos al desierto con Jesús para ser testigos de sus tentaciones por el diablo. La ida al desierto pudiera no sonar muy atractiva: es caliente durante el día y frío por la noche; habitado por serpientes de cascabel, tarántulas y escorpiones. Sin embargo se aprenden muchas lecciones allí. Dios formó a los antiguos esclavos de Egipto en el pueblo de Israel durante esos cuarenta años de estar vagando. Y en el desierto, Jesús nos enseña lo que significa ser hijos amados de Dios, al ser testigos de sus encuentros con el diablo. Satanás: "Si eres Hijo de Dios, tírate de aquí y deja que Dios te coja." Jesús: "Yo no pongo a Dios a prueba." Satanás: "Adórame y te daré todos los reinos del mundo." Jesús: "Yo sólo adoro y sirvo a Dios." Las respuestas de Jesús provienen del libro del Deuteronomio, parte de la Torá, la ley dada a Moisés que expresa la alianza de Dios con Israel. Mientras Adán y Eva cedieron a la tentación de ser como Dios, e Israel estableció un becerro de oro para adorarlo en lugar de Dios, Jesús puso su confianza en el Padre.
