I Will Give You Rest

How do we react when our expectations are shattered? Do we scoff and retreat to our preconceived ideas? Or do we courageously change our opinion or attitude? The folks who encountered Jesus typically had their expectations shattered. His neighbors didn’t expect anything earth-shattering from the carpenter’s son, so they rejected him at once. Scribes and Pharisees condemned him because he ate with sinners, performed cures on the Sabbath, and forgave sins. Many wise and learned people, expecting a Messiah who would free them from the yoke of Roman rule, rejected one who was “meek and humble of heart” (Matthew 11:29), one who would banish the warrior’s bow in favor of bringing peace to nations. But to those “little ones” who were willing to believe and accept him, God the Father and God the Son were revealed. Paul would say it means changing from living according to the flesh to living according to the spirit. It requires transforming from one’s old self to a new self, surrendering to the Holy Spirit. It may be difficult to make such a conversion, but the reward is great. After all, his yoke is easy, his burden light.

Cómo reaccionamos cuando nuestras expectativas no se realizan? ¿Nos burlamos y nos retiramos a nuestras ideas preconcebidas? ¿O cambiamos valientemente nuestra opinión o actitud? La gente que se encontró con Jesús típicamente tenían sus expectativas hechas trizas. Sus vecinos no esperaban nada estremecedor del hijo del carpintero, por lo que lo rechazaron de inmediato. Escribas y fariseos lo condenaron porque comía con los pecadores, realizaba sanaciones los sábados y perdonaba pecadores. Mucha gente sabia y erudita, esperando un Mesías que los liberara del yugo del gobierno romano, rechazaron al que era “manso y humilde de corazón” (Mateo 11:29), uno que desterraría el arco del guerrero a favor de traer la paz a las naciones. Pero para aquellos “pequeños” que estaban dispuestos a creer y aceptarlo, Dios el Padre y Dios el Hijo fueron revelados. Pablo diría que esto significa cambiar de vivir según la carne a vivir según el espíritu. Requiere transformarse del sí mismo anterior a uno nuevo, rindiéndose al Espíritu Santo. Puede ser difícil hacer tal conversión, pero la recompensa es grande. Después de todo, su yugo es fácil, su carga ligera.
