Fire on Earth

The world would certainly be more peaceful if everyone always felt the same way, thought the same things, and held the same beliefs. But human nature doesn’t work that way. Disagreements and divisions occur. In today’s Gospel, Jesus warns his disciples that he has come to bring division, not peace. Really? The angels sang of peace when Jesus was born. The holy Spirit descended upon Jesus in the form of a dove at his baptism. But the baptism Jesus refers to today is the cross, the baptism into his death. In the first reading, Jeremiah was nearly put to death. His preaching angered the princes of power. Similarly, Jesus angered the political and religious authorities. Standing up for their beliefs, they each set the earth on fire. As his disciples, we are often called to do the same. But we are not alone. Jeremiah, after all, was rescued from the cistern. Hebrews assures us that “we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses” (12:1). May the example of others, especially Jesus, “the leader and perfecter of faith,” inspire us to persevere and not grow weary or lose heart (Hebrews 12:2-3).

El mundo ciertamente sería más pacífico si todos sintieran lo mismo, pensaran lo mismo y tuvieran las mismas creencias. Pero la naturaleza humana no funciona de esa manera. Se producen desacuerdos y divisiones. En el Evangelio de hoy, Jesús advierte a sus discípulos que ha venido para traer división, no paz. ¿En serio? Los ángeles cantaron de paz cuando Jesús nació. El Espíritu Santo descendió sobre Jesús en forma de paloma en su bautismo. Pero el bautismo al que Jesús se refiere hoy es la cruz, el bautismo en su muerte. En la primera lectura, Jeremías estuvo a punto de morir. Su predicación enfureció a los príncipes del poder. Del mismo modo, Jesús enfureció a las autoridades políticas y religiosas. En defensa de sus creencias, cada uno incendió la tierra. Como sus discípulos, a menudo estamos llamados a hacer lo mismo. Pero no estamos solos. Jeremías, después de todo, fue rescatado de la cisterna. Hebreos nos asegura que “estamos rodeados por la multitud de antepasados nuestros, que dieron prueba de su fe” (12:1). Que el ejemplo de otros, especialmente Jesús, “el autor y consumador de nuestra fe,” nos inspire a perseverar y no cansarnos o desanimarnos (Hebreos 12:2-3).
