Meaning of Alleluia

The word alleluia, or hallelujah, is used to express praise, joy, or thanks. The word first appeared around the 14th century in Hebrew scripture. The word “Hallelujah” is the Greek form of the Hebrew. It is often used as “Praise ye Jehovah”. It begins or ends several psalms in the Greek scriptures.

In the context of a liturgy, we use “Alleluia” most often as our Gospel Acclamation before the proclamation of the Gospel. Alleluia is often sung in hymns and psalms as well.

For the Gospel Acclamation, “the cantor may intone the Acclamation, which is repeated by the whole assembly. After the cantor or choir sings the verse, the entire assembly again sings the Acclamation. If there is a Gospel procession, the Acclamation may be repeated as often as necessary to accompany the Gospel procession. The verses are as a rule taken from the Lectionary for Mass” (General Instruction of the Roman Missal). During most of the church year, the Alleluia with the proper verse serves as the Gospel Acclamation. It is laudable that the Gospel Acclamation be sung as it “constitutes a rite or act in itself, by which the gathering of the faithful welcomes and greets the Lord who is about to speak to them in the Gospel and profess their faith by means of the chant.” (GIRM 62). During the season of Lent, instead of the word Alleluia, another acclamation may be used such as “Praise to You, Lord Jesus Christ, King of endless glory.” We omit Alleluia during Lent so that during the Easter season the word and acclamation of Alleluia may have more emphasis and meaning.
