An altarcito is a small altar that believers set up as a place for their personal prayer. This Hispanic custom is often observed in homes, but it may also be seen in schools, businesses or other locations. The actual altar might be a single shelf or a small table, usually set against a wall. Upon it are placed images of Jesus, Mary and the saints who have special significance to the household, such as Martin de Porres or a personal patron. Some families hand down such images from one generation to the next, so the articles represent the local family as well as the church's saints. Those who use this altar for prayer may also place a lighted candle there.

Blessed Sacrament candles obtained from the parish church on Holy Thursday are popular. If family members or friends need a job, a cure of some other assistance, their pictures appear on the altarcito. The photos remind the believer to pray, while their placement among religious images represents the communication with God that intercessory prayer addresses. Consequently, some images on the altar are fairly permanent, like those of saints. But others, like those of family, may come and go as their needs do.

Some families have an altar at home just once a year. For example, they may set one up to celebrate the feast of a particular saint. Some households cover the altar in new bedsheets and invite their friends and neighbors to bring food for the poor. The host family then distributes these gifts to the needy.

The altarcito is a place of communication between believers and the mystery of God. It may be the place where people gather for the rosary. It is a place where people remember not just with the mind but with the heart. It enhances the believer's awareness of the divine presence in daily life, and it affirms the sacredness of life and of home.
